Church Mission
The mission of Mt. Zion Baptist Church is well encapsulated by four words: “Serving Christ, Serving Others.” The Bible is clear in two instructions to God’s people: The Great Commandment and The Great Commission. The Great Commandment instructs us to “love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, and mind.” Therefore, we strive to “serve Christ” out of our love for Him and His sacrificial love demonstrated to us. The Great Commission deploys God’s children to “go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,” hence the purpose of “serving others.” Therefore, we take this mission seriously to serve Christ and serve others. Our church’s sincere desire is to lead as many people as possible into a relationship with Jesus Christ through worship, evangelism, discipleship, missions, ministry, and fellowship.
Church History
Founded in May 1853, Mount Zion Baptist Church, located between the communities of Hartselle and Falkville, is one of Morgan County Alabama’s oldest churches. Brought together “by divine grace to embrace the Lord Jesus Christ," a small group of the county’s early settlers from the town of Falkville met in the Piney Grove community to organize the congregation.
Meeting first in the one-room building where the congregation was organized, the church steadily grew and in spite of two disasters - a fire in 1901 and a tornado in 1932 – continued to steadfastly bring the message of Christ’s salvation to the community.
Moving to its current location on Mount Zion Road in 1870, the church has grown and thrived - fulfilling its original vision to “win souls for Christ and to live to the glory of Him who hath called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light."
